The Club

Marple Swimming Club is a competitive, friendly and sociable swimming club based at Marple Swimming Pool which is situated here close to the centre of Marple.

Our primary purpose is to train and maintain a competitive swimming team providing equal opportunity for all and an environment in which each swimmer can endeavour to realise their full potential.

We cater for all age groups and abilities providing lessons for absolute beginner infants through to coaching sessions for senior competitive swimmers. Adult lane swimming sessions are also available.

We are an amateur club, buying pool time from the Council, run by a Committee of largely volunteer parents and Club members. Parents are encouraged to participate in any way they can to assist with the smooth running of the Club and, thereby, ensure its continued success and development.

Brief History

The pool opened in 1932 and the Club was formed soon after in 1933. Apart from a break during the war years the pool has been in more or less continuous use ever since. The pool has been much modernized and has benefited from the installation of a new boiler and heating system and the refurbishment of the changing rooms.

Over the years, several Marple swimmers have been selected to represent Manchester and District and Cheshire in Inter-Association and Inter-County events and some have gone on to swim at National and, most impressively, International level.

Teachers and Coaches
All our teachers and coaches hold Amateur Swimming Association teaching qualifications, or the equivalent, and are CRB checked. They are assisted by poolside and in the water helpers, as appropriate. These are experienced swimmers from the Club who are encouraged and supported by the Club to achieve ASA qualifications. For more information, Meet the Coaches.

There are classes for absolute Beginners which usually take children from around the age of four or five. At the appropriate time, these swimmers will usually feed into the Improvers group and then on to the intermediate Development group.

When swimmers reach the required level of competence in all strokes they will move into the competitive Juniors group and then, as they progress, into the Seniors.  Entry into these groups is dependent on ability and not age. For those who join the Club and can already swim, entry is by time trial.

Beginners and Improvers have one lesson each week.  This increases to two swimming sessions a week for the Development group and three training sessions each week for the Juniors and Seniors.

There are occasional sessions devoted to distance swims (for badges) or to diving tuition.

Adults have their own 3/4 hour lane swimming session twice a week.

Waiting List
Due to the popularity of swimming lessons, the Club operates a waiting list, when necessary, to ensure classes are not overcrowded.  Please contact Kay Jones for further information as to the availability of places.

Galas and Competitions
Both the Junior and Senior Teams regularly compete against other local clubs and clubs in the wider Manchester area in a number of swimming leagues. In addition, many swimmers will have the opportunity to participate individually, representing the Club, in a number of external galas and all swimmers are encouraged to participate in the Club’s Annual Gala. Those who achieve the required entry times may also be eligible to enter County and Regional competitions. For more information, please go to Competitive Swimming.

Link Scheme
The Club supports and actively participates in Stockport Metro’s ‘Club Link’ scheme. This scheme is designed to give local club swimmers the opportunity to try and take their competitive swimming to the next level. For more information, please Contact Us.

The Club’s fee levels reflect the Club’s costs which are principally pool hire and coaching costs.  Reduced fees are available to members who train elsewhere but wish to train at Marple once a week only and also for those who train full time elsewhere but who may compete for Marple. In addition, if three or more from the same family are members, a discount is allowed against the total sum payable. For more information, please Contact Us.

  • team galas being of primary importance.

Parents’ role:

To encourage and assist all members to fulfil their swimming potential.

Additional aims of Marple Swimming Club:

  • To provide an opportunity for all members and parents to assist with teaching and coaching and to acquire qualifications in teaching and officiating.
  • To be a friendly and sociable club internally, friendly and sporting externally.
