Marple Swimming Club is a member of two local leagues, the Inter-Town Friendly League and the Manchester and District Leagues. Many members of the Club are also eligible to compete as individuals, representing the Club, in a number of other external galas and are encouraged to do so. These include the Tadpoles Galas, Stockport Metro Mini Meet Grand Prix, Manchester & District Swimming Championships, Greater Manchester Age Group Competition, Cheshire County Swimming Championships and the North West Regional Age Group and Youth Championships. There is, of course, also our own Annual Club Gala.
It should be noted that there are always closing dates for the submission of entry forms for these galas and swimmers should, therefore, ensure they always adhere to these to avoid disappointment.
Inter-Town Friendly League
This league consists of the following clubs:
- Hyde Seal
- Saracens/Hazel Grove
Each club swims a home and an away gala against every other club. Galas are divided into Junior and Senior sections. There are trophies for the clubs winning the most Junior galas, the most Senior galas and the most full galas.
At the end of the season, a Celebration Gala is held at Grand Central Pools in Stockport involving all the teams. The trophies for the season are awarded on this night, as well as a trophy for the team winning the Celebration Gala. A trophy is also awarded to the team winning under the handicap points system so, no matter how a club’s season may have gone, there is still everything to swim for!
Ages for the season are as at 31st December of the first year of the season and do not change in January. The age groups are: 9/10, 11/12, 13/14 and 15+.
The great advantage of this league is that clubs can swim A and B teams, thus allowing more swimmers to gain competition experience. Only the A team scores points for the gala. Swimmers may swim two individual events and one relay or two relays and one individual.
These are coordinated by Stockport & District Association of Swimming Clubs and usually take place in September each year at Grand Central Pools in Stockport. They are graded age group galas which provide an excellent opportunity for less experienced swimmers to compete in a competitive environment against swimmers at a similar level.
Entry is dependent upon a swimmer’s personal best time not exceeding the qualifying B or C Grade times and age is calculated as at the last day of the competition.
Awards are made to the six fastest swimmers in the B and C Grade in each event. Any swimmer who swims faster than the B qualifying time will receive a ‘speeding ticket’! Trophies will be awarded for the best overall girls and boys teams. Individual trophies will be awarded to the best performing girl and boy in each age group in the B and C Grade.
Stockport Metro Mini Meet Grand Prix
The Mini Meets are coordinated by Stockport Metro Swimming Club and take place between November and June each year at Grand Central Pools. They are a series of time trials open to swimmers aged 10 – 12 years of age from clubs which actively participate in Stockport Metro’s ‘Club Link’ programme and which are willing to provide volunteers for every round. Ages are calculated as at the last day of the competition in June.
The main aim of the Mini Meets is to give young swimmers added incentive to attend their training sessions and to work hard by providing an ideal competitive environment in order to develop their racing skills. They also provide an opportunity for both parents and swimmers to become familiar with ASA Laws, Rules and the BAGCATS awards system. Additionally, regular attendance at the Mini Meets allows coaches to monitor your child’s progress. Parents are also actively encouraged to develop skills as officials and helpers in running the meets which many find very rewarding.
Greater Manchester Swimming Championships
These championships usually take place in October each year at the Manchester Aquatic Centre although this can be subject to change. The age group categories are 12 years and under (Junior), 13 and 14 years (Youth) and 15 years and over (Senior). The age of the swimmer is as at the last day of the competition. Entry is by official entry form. The first, second and third placed swimmers in each group will receive an award. Trophies will be presented to the fastest swimmer in each event from either the Youth or Senior group. Points are also awarded for individual and team events. Trophies are awarded to individuals who gain the most aggregate points in each age group category. A trophy is also presented to the club whose whose male or female section obtains the most aggregate team points. For more information, click here.
Greater Manchester Swimming Associations Age Group Competition
This competition takes place in January/February each year at the Manchester Aquatic Centre. It is a Level 3 Competition licensed by the ASA. Entry times are required to be submitted for this event and they must not be faster than the ‘upper limit’ or slower than the ‘lower limit’ of the Consideration Times set by the organisers.
Age groups for this event are 9/10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15 and 16 and over. Age is calculated as at the last day of the competition.
Swimmers placed in the first six in each age group for each event receive an award. Points are also awarded to individuals finishing in 1st to 6th place and trophies are awarded to the clubs who gain the most aggregate points in the competition in each trophy category.
Two competitors from each relevant age group event may be selected to go forward to the Inter-Association Primary Age Group Competition. For more information, click here.
Cheshire County Senior and Age Group Championships
These Championships take place during February/March each year. The galas usually take place at Macclesfield Leisure Centre and Grand Central Pools. Swimmers can only enter an event if they have achieved the appropriate consideration time at a Licensed Meet in the twelve months prior to the competition (although 9 year olds are permitted to submit times from certain other competitions provided the result sheets are submitted with the entry form). However, since the organisers reserve the right to limit the number of entries, to keep galas to a reasonable length, swimmers who have achieved the consideration time for an event may not, unfortunately, always be permitted to swim. ASA North West Regional Age Group Championships
These championships usually take place over two weekends in June each year at the Manchester Aquatic Centre. Swimmers can only enter an event if they have achieved the appropriate qualifying time. For qualifying times and entry information, click here.
ASA North West Regional Youth Championships
These championships usually take place over one weekend at the beginning of May each year at the Liverpool Aquatic Centre. Swimmers can only enter an event if they have achieved the appropriate qualifying time. For qualifying times and entry information, click here.
Marple Swimming Club Annual Gala
The Annual Gala takes place over two Sundays in November each year. Senior and Junior team members are expected to enter all events in their age group. Swimmers may also enter the Open category races if they have achieved the set qualifying times. Swimmers who are members of the Club but train elsewhere (Squad 2 members) may enter the Open category races only. Entry forms and programme details will be made available a few weeks before the competition. A separate gala will be held for Beginners. Trophies will be awarded to the top three swimmers in each age group at the Club’s Presentation Evening.
