Learning to Swim

Beginners

There are four Beginners classes at Marple Swimming Club. Class numbers are kept to a maximum of ten children to one qualified teacher. Teachers are also assisted by in the water helpers to further increase your child’s confidence and progression. Children swim across the pool in widths.  We follow the nationally recognised ASA swimming curriculum and offer badges and certificates from the associated award scheme.

Beginner 1
The aim of this group is to introduce your child to the water in a safe and fun environment. This group works predominantly on water confidence skills and the introduction of front and back paddle strokes. This group is taught by a qualified teacher who will be in the water with your child, along with at least one water helper.

Beginner 2
In this group, your child will continue to work on the front and back paddle strokes and water confidence skills, which will form the core of most lessons. Children will be gradually introduced to backstroke and breaststroke. This group is taught by a qualified teacher with at least one water helper.

Beginner 3
Children in this class will continue to work on developing their backstroke and breaststroke with the introduction of front crawl. This class will also start to introduce more technical water skills such as surface dives and the rudiments of diving.

Beginner 4
In this group your child will be working on improving their stroke technique in backstroke, breaststroke and front crawl, and they will be introduced to the concept of butterfly. They will continue to work on higher level water skills and diving. They will feed into our Improvers group at the appropriate time.
